The Lensbury’s Five Year Plan has five objectives – the first objective, as it is for all Shell companies, is the healthy and safe running of The Lensbury. It also includes efficient use of the energy needed to run The Lensbury and achieving “best practice” in our social performance and engagement with our Teddington community.
This commitment comes ahead of our second objective, which is achieving revenue and profit targets. The belief of our Board is that focussing on our first object (HSSE and SP = health, safety, security, environment and social performance) will mean that the second objective will follow more easily.
The Board, the Leadership Team and all our Staff spend a significant amount of time thinking, talking and acting on HSSE and SP. In our recent Ground Floor and Ascot Building refurbishment projects, we spent a combined £1.6 million pounds on new “mechanical and electrical” systems in order to get the best outcome in energy savings we could achieve, while improving our members’ experience. That strategy has paid off in a savings for 2014 of 1.4 gigawatts of energy saving and a reduction of 321 tonnes of carbon. This means that we have used 1.4 gigawatts less in energy in 2014 than we did on average in previous years – and this saving will happen every year going forward.
This was achieved because we were willing to invest in the best equipment available for our needs – we paid more in up-front costs for our equipment but it brought with it the energy savings we were after. The new kitchen was a particular star performer – the use of cutting edge “all electric” commercial kitchen equipment created significant energy savings. The rest of the savings came from more efficient heating, cooling and lighting infrastructure on the Ground Floor and in the Ascot Building.
